Touch Of Compassion Ministries
An Outreach Ministry of the
Companions of Jesus
A Franciscan Community of Reconciliation
Casa de San Francisco
(House of St. Francis)
Comanche, Oklahoma U.S.A.
"Touch Of Compassion Ministries" (TOCM)", formerly named "High Desert Ministries", is a non-profit, Independently Chartered Church/Ministry of "Saint Luke Evangelical Christian Ministries", a worldwide non-denominational Church and Christian Ministry. Its headquarters is located at 183951 N 2770 RD, Comanche, OK, USA 73529 (in the small local community of "Grandview") and administered by professed members of the "Companions Of Jesus", a non-denominational Franciscan Order.
The outreach ministry originally started as "Rev. Phil's Military Ministry" when Rev. Philip Evans was still a member of the US Armed Forces. Upon retiring from the military in 2001, he moved to the Antelope Valley in Southern California and renamed (and re-chartered) the ministry as both an "Independent Church" and as an "Outreach Ministry" in the "High-Desert" region of Southern California. In the following years he became involved in various musical ministries and eventually found himself working with his wife Nancy, in the "hospice" field for "Kaiser Permanente Hospitals" as a "Hospice Volunteer" and as a "Certified Bereavement Support Group Facilitator". In 2010 they decided to follow Gods call and relocate to Southern Oklahoma and carry on their ministry work there. It was shortly after relocating that they discovered the old "Valley View Church" located at "5-Mile Junction", East of Walters, OK.
The land for Valley View Church was first acquired in 1915 and the church was under-way by 1916 and physically in place by 1921. The church was a Baptist church at the start. However, at various times in its history, it had non-denominational ministers and pastors and went through a reorganization in 1962. But, by the mid 1970's attendance had dropped off and the church was left abandoned about 1983. The building had been occasionally used for a few years for Bible Study, meetings of the local community and as a "voting place", but finally, by 1983 it was just abandoned.
In the fall of 2010, Touch Of Compassion Ministries (being administered by Brothers and Sisters of the Franciscan Order of the "Companions of Jesus") began looking into the history of the old abandoned church building that was Valley View Church, and checking on its legal status. As it still belonged to the Board of Trustees (or its successors), in 2011 it was decided to pursue a project of "rebuilding and refurbishing" the old church building and picking up where the old church and it's Board of Trustees left off, with a reorganization and new Church Charter as a non-denominational church open to people of all Christian faiths and denominations.
In 2010, Touch Of Compassion Ministries started serving the areas of Cotton, Stephens, Jefferson and Comanche Counties providing Hospice volunteer work, hospice chaplaincy, musical ministries at local nursing homes, and facilitating Bereavement/Grief Support Groups at several locations. Touch Of Compassion Ministries is located at the "Casa de San Francisco" (St. Francis House) on Empire Road in the "Grandview" Area of Stephens County just South of Hwy 53. Church services and Bible Study have been held in the small chapel located there, and hospice services are provided through several "Home Health and Hospice" organizations. Support groups are currently held at various locations and facilities and at "Ray Of Hope Church" (non-denominational) located on US Highway 81 North of Comanche.
